Anyone’s life can be ruined by depression. No matter how old are you, it does not spare you. When you are young, depression can leave a big scratch of psychological and social scars that you will forever bear. When an adult is inflicted of depression, suicides are often the most famous answer. Depression is really a big problem. How can one save his or herself from the ugly marks of depression? More so, how can one save a life?

Since depression has been a problem ever since, there are many different depression treatments available to help anyone. What are these depression treatments? These depression treatments uses psychotherapy, biological treatments, and electroconvulsive therapy as its major weapon.

Psychotherapy offers a number of different numbers of techniques to fight depression. Psychotherapy can be done in a group. It can also be done alone. The different techniques used in psychotherapy are cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, behavioral therapy, and interpersonal therapy. The most used on these techniques is cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy works by teaching an individual on depression to learn new set of behaviors and ways of thinking which they can use in dealing with their day to day lives.

On the other hand, biological treatments work by prescription of medicines. The primary medication considered in a biological treatment is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Prozac (flouxetine) is one of the most famous. Zoloft (sertraline) and Lexapro (escitalopram) are another examples of SSRIs. These biological treatments work by providing individual great concentrations of serotonin which fight their depressed moods. SSRIs are the most considered antidepression treatment due to their gentle side effects aside from the fact that it is the medication with the broadest effect on the symptoms showed by depression.

When an individual does not respond to the above treatments, the last resort would be ti used electroconvulsive therapy. Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT functions by electrically inducing seizures for therapeutic effects. This is made only when all other treatments are not working. This treatment is very fast and effective and is very helpful in situation such as catatonic depression where in the patient is failing to take any kinds of food which can ultimately outcome to death. It is also very helpful in situation where suicide is seen as hope to come out from a depression. When situations are on a helpless mode, that is the only time that ECT is used since it’s effects are not yet fully studied.

The above discussed treatments are only a part of depression treatments. he treatment of depression also have alternative means. Acupuncture, exercise, and music therapy are part of this alternative treatment. Acupuncture helps in helping people with depression by its capability to make the body produce high level of endorphins which gives the body a feeling of well-being. Exercise functions by giving off physiological effects that help contradict depression. It is also helpful in lowering stress which can be a factor for depression. And finally, music therapy helps by the ability of music to induce different set of moods. Studies have shown that there are certain parts parts of the brain particularly the sub-cortical centers that are reached by music. This helps depression by breaking off unhealthy emotions. There are many depression treatments available. It’s a matter of how one call for help.

There are many different depression treatments available to help people recover from depression.
