One of the most common behavioral health disorders is addiction. Addiction is quite raging in every society. Addiction knows no age bracket and socio-economic status. Addiction as defined in the Merriam Webster Dictionary can mean persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful.

Its reputation has sprung from the representation it gives off, the notorious image of negativity. People who are in the pits of substance addiction usually show a series of bad behaviors disturbing people around him or her.

One can get addicted to numerous kinds of substances. Examples of substances that produces negative effects on the body are stimulants, opioids, hallucinogens and PCPs. These substances affect certain biochemicals in our brain which has direct reinforcing effects. The mesolimbic dopamine system is one of the areas of the brain that is involved in effects of these psychoactive substances. A savor of good food and physical satisfaction such as those produced by sexual stimulation activates this kind of system. This system can be stimulated by psychoactive substances already mentioned. However, the effect is much more intense. The activation of mesolimbic dopamine system formulates people to want the reason of activation to duplicate its effects. The utilization

of such substances gives off steady changes in one’s mesolimbic dopamine system which makes an individual yearn for for the substance. The mesolimbic dopamine system gets sensitized once the substance has been used repeatedly. In short term and long term use of these substances, makes hard for the people to resist once they have already tried. The casual trying of any of the substances can make an individual crave for more. The high that is so compelling is the reason why it is wanted more.

Stimulants are substances that turns on the central nervous system. This causes feelings such as pleasure, energy, supremacy, a decreased desire for sleep, and reduced appetite. Examples of stimulants are cocaine, amphetamines, nicotine, and caffeine. Cocaine is one of the most highly addictive substances ever known. This substance can be inhaled to have its effects felt rapidly. Amphetamines are substances initially initiated as antihistamines until people started noticing its stimulant effects. Nicotine is an alkaloid being found in tobaccos. Nicotine can be popularly found in cigarettes. Caffeine on the other hand is the most intense used stimulant substance. Greatest amount of caffeine used is attributed to the wide use of coffee.

Opioids is used for a thousand of years to alleviate pain until its properties have been discovered to be severely addictive. Examples of opioids are morphine and heroin. Morphine was used generally as a pain reliever. This has been in the 19th century until its being addictive was discovered. Methadone and codeine are other examples of opioids. Opioid substances are substances found in the sap of the opium poppy.

When taken in very large amount, these substances produces illusions in perceptions and distortions in the way of thinking in small doses. Peyote, ecstasy, and LSD are the main ingredients of hallucinogens. On the other hand, PCP or phenylcyclidine are substances manufactured for smoking and snorting. PCP is not classified as hallucinogen but its effects are mostly the same. PCP is also popularly called as angel dust, PeaCePill, Hog, and Tranq.

Substance addiction is considered as a behavioral health disorder due to the effects brought about by the use of the substance. It produces a great change in ones behavior that is most of the time negative. This change in behavior usually affects the people that encase the individual.
